Review of the first edition:

“This book was a joy to read and a joy to review. All pharmaceutical physicians should have a copy on their bookshelves, all pharmaceutical companies should have copies in their libraries.”

Reviewer:Patrick J. McDonnell, PharmD(Temple University School of Pharmacy)
Description:This is a truly fine book on the development of pharmaceutics from drug discovery and development to regulatory, business, legal, and ethical issues.
Purpose:The purpose is to provide an overview of pharmaceutical medicine to pharmaceutical physicians, pharmacists, and others working or having an interest in this area. The introductory chapter by editor and author Anthony W. Fox explains what this specialty is in the realm of medicine, how drugs are developed, studied, brought to market, and monitored in a post-marketing setting. The book meets these objectives, not only providing an overview, but delving into areas readers may find useful.
Audience:The audience is as broad as the spectrum of chapters. As a pharmacy educator, I feel it would be an excellent reference for pharmacy students, as well as others in healthcare who may not realize the intensity of the drug development process and the effort that goes into bringing a drug to market. The editors are leaders in the pharmaceutical industry and academia.
Features:Chapters introduce the stages of drug study, protocols, monitoring, and regulation. Nuances in different patient populations are covered in a welcome addition, focusing on the elderly, children, patients with renal and hepatic impairment, and significant drug interactions. These populations often are not included in clinical trials, but, of course, use drug therapies. Despite the lack of a complete list of references for the chapters, I was pleasantly surprised how much the book covered.
Assessment:This isa useful book for those who want a behind the scenes look at how drugs used in their clinical practices come to market. As types of drug therapies are developed and researched, future updates covering issues with new therapies will be necessary.
